You will normally know the front differential guard needs to be replaced when the original panel is no longer able to protect the diff properly. If the guard is bent from an impact and is touching the diff housing or steering components, it should be replaced.

Visible cracks, rust holes or severe corrosion that weakens the metal are also clear signs it can no longer do its job. A missing guard or loose, broken mounting points means the panel cannot stay secure and should be replaced.

If the guard is rubbing, rattling or has deformed to the point that it reduces clearance or traps mud and debris, replacement is recommended. Any situation where the panel can no longer sit straight or provide full coverage over the differential area is a good indication it needs to be changed.
