A failing air suspension tank often shows up as problems with maintaining proper ride height. If the tank can no longer hold pressure, you may notice the vehicle sitting lower than normal, sometimes only on one side, sometimes the entire vehicle. The suspension compressor may run more frequently than usual because it is constantly trying to refill a tank that is leaking or unable to store air. This “overworking” of the compressor is one of the clearest signs of a failing or leaking air tank.

You might hear hissing sounds after shutdown or when the suspension cycles, which can indicate air escaping from the tank or its fittings. Rust or visible corrosion on the tank body is another warning sign, as corrosion often leads to hairline cracks or weakened seams. In cold weather, small cracks may expand, causing sudden pressure loss.

Diagnostic trouble codes related to the air suspension system, such as compressor performance issues or system pressure faults, can also point to a bad tank. Your air suspension may take a long time to raise the vehicle, or it may fail to adjust height altogether. A rougher ride, frequent “Air Suspension Malfunction” messages, or a suspension system entering fail safe mode are additional symptoms that often appear when the air tank loses its ability to hold and regulate pressure correctly.
