You should replace the ball joints when there is noticeable play during inspection, knocking or clunking from the front end, uneven tyre wear, steering wandering or vibration, or if the dust boot is damaged and leaking grease.

Any dryness, looseness or rough movement when the joint is checked off the vehicle is also a sign they need replacement.
